Lighting
Lighting can be categorised into tow forms; fixed ceiling or wall lights and table or floor lamps.

You don’t really want to be changing any light fittings in you can help it. Rented properties usually have simple pendant lighting on the ceiling so you can be a little imaginative with new shades.

However, your best option is to use plug in lamps. Low-level table lamps and floor lamps help to create a nice, cosy atmosphere, especially at night. Evenly space these throughout the room of your choice – usually the lounge or dining room – toward the walls, to create an even, warm glow that bounces inwards.
Another option that is both cheap and fun are to use fairy lights. These come in all shapes, sizes and colours and, with a bit of imagination, can help illuminate an area or room in a modern, chic way.

Bedrooms are a favourite place whilst they can also add ambience to a lounge or dining room. Outside, they can spruce up a patio a small seating area. Have a play!

Plants

Plants are a fantastic way to make any house or flat feel more lived in and comfortable. There are plants for every lifestyle and they will add colour, life and improve the air too.

So, if you are going to introduce a bit of greenery to the place, choose plants that will suit your own way of living. If you’re not particularly green-fingered, then go for plants that are easy to maintain such as succulents, spider plants or, my favourite, mother in laws tongue! A quick Google search will give you plenty of other ideas.
However, if you want to go more adventurous, mini potted trees, exotic shrubs or something really extravagant that you can look after and nurture will fill your home with a special, personal touch.

A regular supply of fresh flowers will also brighten up the place enormously.

Rugs and Throws

Adding different textiles to your home is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to make a space feel like your own. Brightening up that plain furniture will add your own personality. Throw over a throw (!) or scatter some cushions to instantly change the appearance of boring looking furniture.

Now, you aren’t going to start laying new carpets in your rental property, however, if you’re stuck with dull looking carpets, laminate flooring or even lino, a nice colourful rug will do the trick adding some instant character to your floor. eBay is a great place for textiles as a lot of sellers have huge stocks and lots of different styles.

Photo’s, Art and Pictures

It’s the most obvious one isn’t it? Personal photos, family images and your favourite art and pictures will easily make an impersonal space become personal instantly.

There are lots of new-fangled hanging strips and tape which will enable you to hang all sorts of things without leaving holes and damage that you will have to sort out later.

A bit of imagination and some internet bargain searching will help turn your house into a home.

Good luck!
